SFTC Seattle - 2nd annual event

ISSAQUAH, Wash. May 2018– On the shores of Lake Sammamish not even the return of a smoky haze or an August drizzle could take away from the vibrancy of what brought this crowd together to raise money and awareness for early detection of breast cancer.

"To build a community, you need a reason to bring people together, and fun seems a good way to do that, " said Dan Van Dyck, executive director of Standup For The Cure. “We build a community around support and compassion." Mahalo for all your consistent hard work and stoke, Dan.

Standup for the Cure is a national fundraiser that uses paddleboards as a way to broach the difficult subject of breast cancer, and raise money and awareness for early detection. A mobile mammogram machine was on site to give screenings.

Nearly every family in one way or another has been affected by the disease, and our sponsor KOMO News's family is no different.

"Our whole motto is have fun and save lives, and if we can do that, early detection is a big part of that, and that's why my wife is here paddle boarding today,” said KOMO sports director Mike Ferrari. Ferrari helped bring the event to our area last year.

"For me, my KOMO family, and my real family have been integral in how I've been able to come this far,” said KOMO’s traffic anchor Paris Jackson. Jackson is finishing her fight. "Moving forward, what we can do here is to bring more awareness," Jackson said.  And KOMO Radio’s Carleen Johnson is at her first fundraiser since her diagnosis. "It was a lot more emotional than I expected it to be,” Johnson said. Full story: https://bit.ly/2LkTLT6

"I'm three years into it and seven surgeries and they still can't figure some things out with my body, she added. “And it's not easy, so for someone else not to have to go through that, that's what today is about.”

Mahalo to the KOMO News Team

We are grateful for the entire KOMO News Team that helped make our 2nd annual Standup for the Cure event on Lake Sammamish a success.
All of the KOMO family got board and supported the event, we could not do it without you.

Congrats to the Gold Sponsors Eastside FC Community and Trappers Sushi!

Overcast skies, chilly air with some lingering smoke from regional fires didn’t stop these weekend warriors from coming out to paddle board on Lake Sammamish and raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Standup Seattle. Many, many thanks to Nina Ramsey, the Eastside FC Community Outreach Coordinator, Chance Fry, EFC Executive Director and all the members of Team Eastside Kicks Back for coming out and making this second annual fundraiser the largest participation yet for Standup Seattle and more than doubling the amount of money raised last year! Thank you Eastside for doing your part for the cure
